ITALY MAYOR – Bergamo Mayor Giorgio Gori revealed the situation in the church that was turned into a morgue amid the COVID-19 crisis.
Italy was hit hard by coronavirus or the COVID-19, a pandemic that infected over two (2) million people across the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is going to be a long-term battle.
After China where the virus was first recorded, Italy became the second epicenter of the disease. For several weeks, the country recorded hundreds of deaths daily.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte initially locked down the Lombardy region, the epicenter of COVID-19 in Italy. After seeing it was not enough to contain the spread of the disease, he extended it into a total lockdown covering the whole country.
Currently, a total of over 178,000 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the country. The death toll is at 23,660 now and the daily death record has slowly declined.
Amid the outbreak of COVID-19 in Italy, a church was turned into a morgue as hundreds of deaths were recorded daily and local morgues and crematoriums were not able to handle it all anymore.
Now that Italy is already recovering from the COVID-19 crisis, Bergamo, Italy Mayor Giorgio Gori gave an update on the situation on the church-turned-morgue now as the deaths decline.
The Italy Mayor shared a photo of the said church that became morgue during the coronavirus outbreak in the country. It is now empty of coffins and flowers can be seen inside.
May Italy and the rest of the world win the fight against COVID-19 and may the souls of those who died during the pandemic rest in peace.
