ABS-CBN Fate Up To Supreme Court, Congress, Says Palace

Malacañang on Tuesday isolated itself again from ABS-CBN Corp’s franchise ordeal, insisting that the fate of the company will rely upon Congress and the Supreme Court.

This, as Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said that a petition by the Office of the Solicitor General to invalidate ABS-CBN’s franchise will be decided by the Supreme Court, while granting the company a fresh 25-year franchise will leave it to Congress.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said during a press briefing that President Rodrigo Duterte has nothing to with the solicitor general’s petition. He added that Congress, not the President, has the sole power to grant a franchise since the Congress, under the 1987 Constitution, can overturn a President’s veto if two-thirds of the body would agree to pass the bill.
