DOH Waits For Risk Assessment Before Pushing Total Ban To China

The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday said that the department will wait for the latest risk assessment from the World Health Organization (WHO) before pushing for a total ban on travelers from China.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said that the temporary travel restriction was only for travelers coming from Hubei province. Also, Duque said that President Rodrigo Duterte has already approved the recommendation.

Earlier, Duque said that banning tourists from China may cause repercussions since it was not the only country with confirmed cases of 2019 novel coronavirus. He added that China might question why the Philippines was not doing the same as other countries with reported confirmed cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday declared a global health emergency as the virus cases were reported in 18 countries, including the Philippines.

Duque said that it was possible for the Philippines that more Chinese provinces may be included in the travel restrictions, yet he added that there were other countries that already have declared cases of the virus. Duque also said that he would rather accept the experts’ say on the matter.

Lawmakers also called on the Philippine government to impose a total ban on travel to and from China.
