Harry Roque affirmed his desire to run for senator in the 2022 national elections.
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on Wednesday affirmed his desire to run for senator in the 2022 national elections.
In an interview on “The Mangahas Interviews”, Roque told Mangahas that he’s seeking to return the late Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago’s caliber to the Senate. He also hinted that he and the late senator have the “same level of quality”.
“So sa akin, hindi ko po nakikita ‘yung liderato sa kalibre ni Miriam Defensor Santiago, sa totoo lang, doon sa mga nais kumuha ng mandato sa Senado. At ‘yan po ang dahilan kung bakit nag-iisip tayo, bakit hindi natin ibalik ‘yung ganyang kalibre kaysa ibibigay natin doon sa mahilig lang mag pork barrel sa Senado,” Roque said.

Roque shared that he and the late senator had similar journeys in their political career.
According to him, they both taught at the College of Law and been criticized for their acerbic tongue. However, Roque said that they have the same principles for what’s right and for democracy.
Santiago, who died at the age of 71 last 2016 due to cancer, was dubbed the “Iron Lady of Asia” for her no-nonsense drive against graft and corruption. In her career, Santiago served in all three branches of government — executive, judicial, and legislative.
The late senator also served as a judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), an independent body that prosecuted individuals for crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Meanwhile, Roque was seeking to secure a seat in the International Law Commission (ILC). This was opposed by critics, who said that Roque had a poor track record on human rights as a liability to the body.
