The DOH continued to insist on the use of face shield in enclosed spaces
The Department of Health (DOH) said that it continued to insist on the use of face shield in the Philippines, especially in enclosed spaces.
The Health Department stressed that face shied still reduced the risk of coronavirus infection, especially in enclosed spaces, as government officials continued to debate on the use of face shield amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
On Friday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told CNN Philippines’ The Source that based on studies, face shields, when coupled with face masks, provided up to 90 percent protection from the coronavirus disease.
According to Vergeire, wearing face shields had proven to be effective because it covered the whole face, eyes, nose, and mouth and it also prevented the droplets from landing on someone’s face.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) was appealing to President Rodrigo Duterte to maintain the mandatory use of face shields, at least for enclosed spaces such as hospitals, workplaces, schools, public transport terminals, commercial establishments (such as but not limited to food establishments, malls and public markets), and places of worship.
“Ito na ang pinaglalaban natin ngayon na dahil merong pronouncement ang World Health Organization that [COVID-19] can be airborne in enclosed spaces, all the more that we need face shields in enclosed spaces because it adds to the protection,” Vergeire said.
Last Wednesday, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said that President Duterte had agreed that face shields should be used only inside hospitals, but this was prior to the IATF meeting that discussed the said issue. There’s still no written order revising previous guidelines on the face shield.
