The Philippine government would “recapacitate” LGUs to improve their contact tracing efforts, according to Baguio City Mayor Magalong.
Contact tracing czar Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said that the Philippine government would “recapacitate” local government units (LGUs) in order to improve their contact tracing efforts.
In a report on Inquirer, Mayor Magalong on Tuesday admitted that the Philippine government’s contact tracing efforts were not up to par.
Mayor Magalong agreed that the country’s contact tracing activities were the “weakest point” of the government’s response against COVID-19, echoing the earlier sentiment on Malacañang.
In a briefing, Mayor Magalong said that the country’s contact tracing performance was poor even though they have capacity building in place.
Mayor Magalong attributed the low-contact tracing efficiency ratio to the data collection system issues, lack of supervision, and overwhelmed contact tracers.

In order to address it, Mayor Magalong said that the national government would “recapacitate” local government units in order to improve their contact tracing efforts.
According to Mayor Magalong, they’re working with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on this.
“We had a series of meeting with the local government academy. Magkakaroon uli tayo ng re-capacitating ng ating mga LGU. Ngayon kinu-consolidate na ng ating DILG iyong mga listahan ng local government na kailangan nila ng tulong at the same time iyong mga local government na nagbu-volunteer na sana mabigyan uli sila ng mentoring,” Mayor Magalong said.
Mayor Magalong also said that the instructions for contract tracing for second-generation and third-generation contacts of COVID-19 cases would be included in the manual distributed to local government units.
