Lacson fires back at Duterte
Senator Panfilo Lacson responded to President Rodrigo Duterte’s remarks after he spoke about the country’s Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) in the United States.
On Monday night, the President said that the senator should not dive into the issue of foreign relations because “the Constitution of the Philippines provides that the foreign relations or foreign policy is vested in the president alone.”
Duterte added that he does not want to pay attention to Lacson’s previous “patama” but if he pulls it off next time, he will be prompted to consult a lawyer.
Meanwhile, the legislator equated the President and mentioned that the Constitution states that senators are involved in foreign affairs.
“Mr President, read the 1987 Constitution,” Lacson said in a tweet earlier.
“A senator has something to do with international agreements: Article VII Section 21. No treaty or international agreement shall be valid and effective unless concurred in by at least two-thirds of all the Members of the Senate,” Lacson added.
It can be recalled that Duterte said that the US has to pay if it wants the VFA to continue in the Philippines.
On the other hand, the senator said at the time that the country seemed to be extorting money from the United States.
