Photographer Exposes How KMJS, GMA Wants To Pay You With “Courtesy”

KMJS WANTS YOUR SHOTS FOR FREE – Photographer, Ezra Acayan exposes a conversation he had with producers from GMA and KMJS.

Acayan, a former photographer for Reuters who is currently working for Getty Images went to areas severely affected by Typhoon Ulysses. The photos he took for Getty Images depicted not Ulysses’ destruction, but also the emotional turmoil brought upon the victims.

Naturally, taking these shots take effort, time, experience, and skill – all of which are definitely NOT FREE. However, a researcher from Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, one of the biggest programs in Philippine Television, asked if they could use it for free.

“I would just like if we can use your pictures for our local and international airing, online platforms, and multiple replays? Rest assured proper courtesy will be given“. In short, this quote meant that they want to use the photos in exchange for exposure.

Furthermore, Acayan reveals that this wasn’t the first time producers from GMA approached him for free pictures.

On his official Facebook account, Acayan stated:

“Your programs that have “local and international airing” with “online platforms and multiple replays” make millions, so why can’t you offer to pay photographers? Many photographers invest their own time, equipment, and expenses, and put themselves in danger to produce these pictures.“

Unfortunately, payment with exposure isn’t an uncommon thing in the industry. But, that doesn’t mean it should be something prevalent in the future, especially from large companies.
