Sputnik V COVID-19 Vaccine ‘More Than 90%’ Effective, Says Russia’s Health Ministry

Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine was “more than 90%” effective, according to Russia’s health ministry.

A representative of Russia’s health ministry on Monday said that Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine was “more than 90%” effective.

This, after Pfizer and BioNTech announced that a jointly-developed COVID-19 vaccine was “90% effective” in its ongoing Phase 3 trials.

In a statement, Oksana Drapkina — director of a research institute under the health ministry — said that they’re responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine among citizens who had received it as part of its mass vaccination program.

Based on our observations, its effectiveness is also more than 90%. The appearance of another effective vaccine — this is good news for everyone,” said Drapkina.

Russia was rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine for domestic use despite the fact that late-stage trials haven’t yet finished.

Alexander Gintsburg, the director of Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute which developed the Russian COVID-19 vaccine candidate, earlier on Monday said that he welcomed the Pfizer news.

Gintsburg also said that they expected to publish interim results of the post-registration trial of Sputnik V vaccine, the so-called Phase III trials, in the near future.

I am sure that its effectiveness level will also be high,” Gintsburg said.

Russia was gearing up to publish the preliminary results of an ongoing Phase 3 human trial this month, adding that it’s testing the Sputnik V vaccine on 40,000 people in Moscow.
