Super Typhoon ‘Uwan’ Looms: PAGASA Warns of Possible Signal No. 5 Alert

Super Typhoon ‘Uwan’ Could Bring Signal No. 5 to Parts of the Philippines

SUPER TYPHOON UWAN – The country braces for possible extreme weather as PAGASA warns that Super Typhoon Uwan could intensify enough to trigger Signal No. 5 in several areas.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that Tropical Storm Fung-Wong, which will be named “Uwan” once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), could intensify into a super typhoon, possibly prompting the declaration of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 5 in parts of the country.

According to PAGASA, there is a strong likelihood that the powerful typhoon will reach Signal No. 5 once it begins to affect the country. “The highest possible Wind Signal for the current forecast scenario is Wind Signal No. 5. Deterioration of weather condition may begin on Sunday (09 November),” the agency said.

Based on PAGASA’s 11 p.m. weather bulletin on Thursday, November 6, the tropical storm was last spotted 1,550 kilometers east of Northeastern Mindanao, still outside the PAR. It currently packs maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 105 kilometers per hour, moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.

PAGASA said the storm is expected to enter the PAR by Friday night, November 7, or early Saturday morning, November 8, and will be named Uwan upon entry. Forecasters warn that it may rapidly strengthen into a super typhoon as it continues to approach the country.

The weather bureau is expected to begin raising wind signals in the eastern portion of Luzon and some provinces in Samar today or by tomorrow morning. PAGASA also cautioned that “Potentially life-threatening stormy conditions may occur over Northern Luzon and portions of Central Luzon on Monday (10 November) and Tuesday (11 November).”

“There is also a potential for high storm surge risk and related coastal flooding, especially in Northern Luzon and the east coast of Central Luzon. Storm surge warnings may be issued as early as Saturday,” PAGASA added.
