Following the SC Trial, Senators Set To Discuss the Fate of VP Sara Duterte’s Impeachment Trial Today

SENATORS – The Senate is set to decide on the fate of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte today.

Following the ruling of the Supreme Court on the Articles of Impeachment against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte which was released ahead of the opening of the 20th Congress, there are a lot of speculations as to whether or not the impeachment trial of the Vice President will push through.

The Supreme Court ruling declared the Articles of Impeachment against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte as “unconstitutional”. According to the high court, the impeachment complaint did not abide by the one-year rule in the Constitution with regards to impeachments.

The decision of the court is immediately executory but a motion for reconsideration may be filed. Some complainants and the House of Representatives filed a motion for reconsideration before the high court over its decision.

Following the move, the House of Representatives asked the Senate to delay its decision over the impeachment trial and wait for their appeal. Sen. Risa Hontiveros claimed that she will block all motions seeking to dismiss the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte as it is allegedly “premature” to decide on the matter.

Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero previously said the senators will decide on the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte on August 6 which is today. According to him, it is give ample time to senators to study the matter.

Today, the Duterte bloc and the senators who seek for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte to push through are expected to clash in a debate according to Sen. Erwin Tulfo based on a report on PhilStar. The Senate resolution seeking for Duterte’s impeachment trial to proceed was signed by:

  • Sen. Bam Aquino
  • Sen. Kiko Pangilinan
  • Sen. Tito Sotto

Recently, Sen. Bato dela Rosa who is a known ally of the Duterte expressed his belief that there is no need for a debate. He stressed that the Supreme Court has spoken. He also once again mentioned God in his statement to reports.
