Marcos has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring and revitalizing the historic districts along the Pasig River. Speaking during the lighting ceremony of the Jones Bridge on Saturday evening, the President emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage as part of the country’s ongoing transformation.

The event, which also marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China, was held at the Pasig River Esplanade. From the view deck, the President addressed the crowd against the backdrop of the newly illuminated Jones Bridge, a symbol of Manila’s enduring architectural legacy and a reminder of the city’s rich past.

President Marcos highlighted the efforts being undertaken to breathe new life into the Pasig River, a historically significant waterway that once served as Manila’s main thoroughfare. According to him, restoring the areas around the river is not only about beautification but also about reconnecting Filipinos with their cultural roots.

He reiterated that the government aims to turn the Pasig River corridor into a vibrant space for both locals and tourists by enhancing its accessibility and aesthetic appeal. This includes developing esplanades, walkways, and parks that will serve as green and cultural spaces for the public.

The President’s recent appearance also follows the previous inauguration of a showcase area of the Pasig River Esplanade, located behind the Manila Central Post Office, which he and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos opened last year. That project was seen as a first step toward the broader revitalization of the river and its surrounding landmarks.

The initiative to restore the Pasig River is part of a larger urban renewal plan focused on sustainability, heritage preservation, and inclusive development. As efforts move forward, the government hopes to inspire a renewed appreciation for historical districts while promoting environmental rehabilitation and cultural pride.
