Cyrille Payumo Apologizes for Wearing Catriona Gray’s Famous Gown
CYRILLE PAYUMO – Miss Charm Philippines Cyrille Payumo recently issued an apology after facing backlash for wearing Catriona Gray’s iconic gown at a public event.
Cyrille Payumo, the reigning Miss Charm Philippines, recently addressed controversy surrounding her decision to wear Catriona Gray’s iconic gown during her final walk at the Miss Universe Pampanga pageant. Taking to social media, Cyrille expressed her apologies to pageant fans who saw the move as a misstep.
The gown, a creation by esteemed designer Mark Tumang, was the same one worn by Catriona Gray when she crowned her successor, Zozibini Tunzi of South Africa, as Miss Universe 2019. Cyrille saw the opportunity to wear the gown as a tribute to both Catriona’s historic win and Tumang’s artistic genius. However, reactions from pageant enthusiasts were divided—some appreciated the homage, while others believed it detracted from the significance of Catriona’s achievement.
In response to the discussions, Cyrille took to Instagram to share her thoughts and clarify her intentions. Posting photos of herself in the gown, she explained that Tumang himself had sponsored her final walk and offered her the chance to wear the celebrated piece. She described feeling “excitement, nerves, and a profound sense of honor” at the opportunity.
Understanding the emotions stirred by her choice, Cyrille emphasized that she never meant to diminish Catriona’s legacy or cause any offense. Instead, she intended to celebrate not only her own journey as Miss Charm Philippines but also the artistry of Tumang, a fellow Kapampangan designer. She acknowledged the differing opinions on the matter and expressed her sincere apologies to those who felt hurt by her decision. She also stated that she would take this as an opportunity for reflection and growth.
Cyrille Payumo was crowned Miss Charm Philippines in May last year during the Miss Universe Philippines coronation night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The event also saw Chelsea Manalo secure the title of Miss Universe Philippines. Despite the recent controversy, Cyrille remains committed to representing her title with grace and respect, showing appreciation for both the legacy of past queens and the artistry that continues to shape the world of pageantry.
