Former Convict Returns in Jail After Attempting to Steal Chocolates Due to Hunger

Former Convict Lands Back in Jail After Stealing Chocolates From Department Store

A former convict lands back in jail after attempting to shoplift nine bars of imported chocolate from a department store in Cebu City.

Shoplifting is the act of taking goods from a store or retail shop without paying for them. People who shoplift usually hide the items in their clothing, bags, or other personal belongings and attempt to leave the store without being noticed.

It’s a form of theft, and it doesn’t matter if the stolen item is small or large, taking anything without paying is considered illegal.

Shoplifting can involve different tactics, like switching price tags to pay less for an item, consuming food or drinks in the store without purchasing them, or even using stolen goods to resell for profit.

People may shoplift for various reasons, such as financial struggles, peer pressure, or even just for the thrill of getting away with it. However, the most common excuse is the lack of money to buy what they want or need.

On Saturday, October 12, 2024, the 42-year-old former convict identified as Alex Jimenez was caught by security guards while trying to leave the grocery section with the stolen nine bars of imported chocolates hidden in his pockets.

Jimenez, a resident of Barangay Tinago, Cebu City, explained that he was simply hungry and had a craving for chocolate, leading him to attempt the theft. The total value of the nine imported chocolate bars amounted to P1,575, with each bar priced at P175.

Authorities revealed that Jimenez had previously served time for illegal drug-related offenses. Since his release, he has struggled to find employment, leaving him in a difficult financial situation.

In a previous report, a 53-year-old pedicab driver arrested for stealing 2 cans of luncheon meat

He admitted that his hunger drove him to steal the chocolates, even though he knew it was wrong.
