James Yap Shares He Hasn’t Seen His Son Bimby in a Decade
JAMES YAP – The PBA player revealed that he has not seen his son, Bimby Aquino Yap, in ten years. Bimby is James’ child with his ex-wife, Kris Aquino.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News on October 9, 2024, James shared his candid response about his estranged relationship with Bimby, acknowledging the long period of no contact. James was interviewed while filing his candidacy for councilor in San Juan City’s first district. The discussion about his son brought attention back to the strained father-son relationship that has persisted for a decade.
Kris Aquino, Bimby’s mother, addressed the issue last year in a social media post. She expressed her desire to avoid repeating her own fatherless childhood experience for Bimby. Despite past misunderstandings, Kris allowed her son to decide whether to rebuild his relationship with his father. She emphasized that from the age of eight, Bimby was given the freedom to make decisions about his life. At 16, she encouraged him to be open to reconciliation, especially if it could lead to peace and a better relationship with James.
On Father’s Day, June 18, 2024, Bimby took the first step towards reconnecting with his father. Kris shared how proud she was of her son for reaching out, describing the moment as a crucial starting point in mending their relationship.
The last public interaction between James and Bimby occurred at the funeral of former President Noynoy Aquino in June 2021. Despite being present at the event, James was unable to approach his son directly.
James and Kris were married in 2005 but separated in 2012. Since then, their lives have taken different paths, with Kris focusing on her family and health, having spent several years in the U.S. for treatment. Now back in the Philippines, Kris and Bimby are rebuilding their lives, with Bimby taking the initiative to reconnect with his father.
