Taxi Driver Gives Back P200,000 to Passenger with Health Issue

JAMES PALMA – A 57-year-old taxi driver showed remarkable honesty by returning the P200,000 left behind by a passenger, despite his low income.

On September 23, 2024, he picked up a couple from a hospital on General Luna Street and drove them to the Iloilo Central Market around 10 a.m. After they got out of the cab, James discovered a black bag on the backseat while preparing to assist another passenger.

Upon inspecting the bag, he found a large sum of money inside. Without hesitation, he contacted the couple and arranged to return the money that same afternoon. The owners were immensely grateful that someone like James would take the time and effort to track them down and return such a significant amount.

James explained that it was an easy decision for him because he always thinks of the owners first, prioritizing their needs over his struggles. He believes that money is easier to find when one enjoys good health, which is why he prays for his well-being alongside other concerns. His empathy for those who have lost money also helps him resist temptation, knowing the emotional toll it can take.

Later, he learned that the money was meant for the hospital confinement of one of the passengers. Reflecting on the experience, James admitted that he felt emotional and that finding the money was just a material matter; having good health allows one to earn more in life.

In recognition of his kindness, the couple invited James to their home in Pavia to thank him personally. The following day, the passenger was able to proceed with their scheduled hospital confinement. James emphasized the principle that no one should keep what doesn’t belong to them, stating that returning lost items opens the door to blessings. He concluded with a heartfelt prayer for favorable returns on their journeys, saying, “Mangamuyo lang ta nga kaluy-an permi byahe ta,” which means, “Let’s all pray that our trips get favorable returns every time.”
