Teacher Reportedly Passes Away from Stress Induced by Principal’s Insults
MARJORIE BOLDO – The Department of Education (DepEd) Davao de Oro is investigating the death of a teacher from Tibagon Elementary School, who passed away on September 19.
Reports suggest her death was linked to stress caused by insults from the school principal. This situation began when a student in her class sustained a head injury after being restless, despite repeated admonishments. Following the incident, the child’s parents reported her to the principal, leading to painful reprimands directed at Teacher Marjorie.
In a group chat with fellow teachers, she expressed her distress over the principal’s comments regarding her competence after 31 years in the profession. She reportedly internalized these insults, contributing to her severe stress and subsequent hospitalization. Tragically, she later died due to complications believed to stem from this stress.
In light of these events, the DepEd has called in the principal for questioning as part of their ongoing investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding Teacher Marjorie’s death and address the allegations against him.
The investigation aims to uncover the context of the situation, including the principal’s conduct and the school environment that may have contributed to the teacher’s distress. Family members and colleagues have voiced concerns, emphasizing the need for a supportive atmosphere in educational settings to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As the DepEd continues to probe this matter, there is hope that lessons learned will lead to better treatment of teachers and a clearer understanding of how to address conflicts within the educational system.
Meanwhile, it can be recalled that in 2022, a 57-year-old teacher named Nora Atule Bolo from Daraga, Albay, allegedly died due to overwork after her principal refused to grant her sick leave. Nora had allegedly asked for permission to take leave because she was unwell, but the principal insisted she complete her Class Observation (CO) before being allowed to be absent.
Despite her illness, Nora reported to work on September 12 to prepare for the CO scheduled for the following day. After her condition worsened, she went to the hospital but unfortunately lost consciousness and passed away while still in her uniform.
