ENGLAND – A 285-year-old lemon was sold for £1,400 or P100,000 in an auction.
Lemon is a citrus fruit known for its bright yellow color, tart taste, and refreshing fragrance. Scientifically called Citrus limon, lemons belong to the Rutaceae family. These small, oval, or elliptical fruits have a thin outer peel, or zest, that contains essential oils contributing to their distinct aroma. Inside, the fruit is divided into juicy segments.
Lemons are widely used in various culinary applications. The juice and zest are common ingredients in cooking, baking, and beverages, adding a burst of flavor to dishes and desserts. Lemonade, a popular beverage, is made by diluting lemon juice with water and sweetening the mixture.
Nutritionally, lemons are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that supports the immune system. They also contain small amounts of other vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Beyond culinary uses, lemons are employed in non-culinary contexts. The essential oil extracted from lemon peel is used in aromatherapy and serves as a flavoring agent.
There are different varieties of lemons, with some popular ones including Eureka, Lisbon, Meyer, and Ponderosa. Known for their versatility, health benefits, and refreshing qualities, lemons have become a staple in various aspects of cooking, baking, and overall well-being.
Speaking of which, a 285-year-old lemon was sold for £1,400 or P100,000 in an auction in England. According to BBC News, it was discovered hidden under a drawer of a 19th-century cabinet, which was photographed for sale at Brettells Auctioneers & Valuers in Newport, Shropshire.
The cabinet itself was sold for only £32 or P2,000. The auction house then decided to try selling the lemon, sparking interest from bidders. The lemon bears an inscription that reads, “Given By Mr P Lu Franchini Nov 4 1739 to Miss E Baxter.” Other ancient items sold at the auction include 2,000-year-old butter, 348-year-old cheese, and a 60-year-old cake.
