Netizens Remember Joey de Leon’s Joke in 2017 About Depression

Joey de Leon’s joke about depression in 2017 revisited by netizens

JOEY DE LEON – Netizens revisited the 2017 joke of the veteran television host about “depression.”

Joey de Leon faced backlash from netizens for a joke he made during a segment of their noontime show E.A.T. In the Gimme 5: Laro ng mga Henyo segment, a contestant was asked to list five things that could be hung around a person’s neck. Joey jokingly suggested that a “lubid” (rope) could also be hung around the neck, saying, “Lubid lubid, nakakalimutan niyo.”

This remark disappointed many mental health advocates, who recalled Joey’s previous public apology in 2017 after he made light of mental health issues. To recall, it was on October 5, 2017 episode of Eat Bulaga, when a contest winner mentioned his mental health problem, Joey, who was one of the hosts at the time, attempted to dismiss the contestant’s issue, saying, “Yung depression, gawa-gawa lang ng mga tao ‘yan, gawa nila sa sarili nila.”

Maine Mendoza disagreed with Joey’s opinion, emphasizing the seriousness of depression and the need to support those who experience it, especially among young people. Joey continued to insist that depression was a term created by wealthy individuals, sparking widespread criticism, including from the government.

Subsequently, Joey publicly apologized and acknowledged his mistake, stating, “Nagkamali po ako. Pinagalitan ako ng misis ko. Pinaliwanag nya at ng mga anak namin,” and adding, “Ako’y humihingi ng paumanhin sa mga napaitan sa mga nabanggit ko, at humihingi ng inyong pang-unawa.”

Meanwhile, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board or MTRCB has issued a statement regarding the latest joke of Joey de Leon. According to the government agency, they will review the complaints being raised against the TV5 noontime show.
