This idiom primarily comes from scientific and regulatory texts as well as orders from the military and other governments. Charles H. La Wall used the term “rose-red zone” to describe a variety of outcomes that could be obtained when formaldehyde vapor was added to a solution of sulfuric acid and morphine sulfate in a scientific article that was published in 1905 (Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the New Jersey Pharmaceutical Association, Volume 35, p. 72).

In the disputed Middle Eastern lands, the Franco-British Treaty of 1916 established a number of distinct zones, each of which was identified by a color name (blue, red, or brown). In contrast to the blue zone, which was governed by France, the red zone was established as a region under the control of Great Britain.
