Tiger sharks attack and kill a fisherman in Occidental Mindoro

SHARK ATTACK – A fisherman in Occidental Mindoro was tragically attacked and killed by tiger sharks.

The tiger shark is a large predatory shark found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. It is named for its distinctive tiger-like markings on its back and sides. These sharks can grow up to 16 feet or more and have powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth.

Tiger sharks are opportunistic predators known for their varied diet, earning them the nickname “garbage cans of the sea.” They consume fish, seals, dolphins, turtles, seabirds, and even other sharks. They are also scavengers, often found with non-food items in their stomachs.

As apex predators, tiger sharks are strong and have aggressive feeding habits. While they are potentially dangerous to humans, actual shark attacks on humans are rare compared to other species. It is still important to exercise caution when encountering tiger sharks or any shark species in their natural habitat.

Although not currently classified as endangered, tiger sharks face threats from overfishing, habitat degradation, and accidental capture in fishing gear. Conservation efforts are in place to protect their populations, including fishing regulations and habitat preservation measures. Monitoring initiatives aim to ensure their survival and maintain the balance of marine ecosystems.
