Elreen Ando: “Matagal ko na to ginoal na makuha yung gold medal para sa papa ko”
ELREEN ANDO – The weightlifting champion said she’s glad that she fulfilled her late father’s lifelong dream for her as she won the gold medal in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.
The golden victory wasn’t just a simple win for Elreen as she managed to break 3 records in the weightlifting competition..
Elreen broke the snatch record in the women’s 59-kg category when she lifted 98kg, shattering the previous mark at 96kg. She also reset the record in the clean and jerk after hoisting 118kg and breaking the previous record of 115kg. The weightlifter also set a new mark at 216kg in total, smashing the previous record at 210kg.
In an interview with reporters in Cambodia, Elreen shared that it had always been her late father’s wish to see her cop the SEA Games gold medal.

Elreen finally achieved that on Sunday, but her father was no longer around to see it. According to her, her father died last year because of liver cancer. Still, Elreen said she’s dedicating the victory to her late father.
“Itong medal na kinuha ko at pinagsikapan ko, matagal na ’tong hiniling ng papa ko nung buhay pa siya,” Elreen said. “Kahit wala na si papa, andito pa rin, gino-goal ko pa rin na makuha ‘yung gold medal sa SEA Games.”

Meanwhile, GMA News Online reported that Filipino Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio won her 2nd SEA Games gold medal on Sunday as she won against Indonesia’s Ratna Sari Devi in the gold medal boxing match of the women’s 57-kg finals.
