EJ Obiena on his gold medal-winning SEA Games shoes: “I’m auctioning these spikes.”
EJ OBIENA – The Filipino pole vaulter said that he’s auctioning the shoes he used in the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia.
The world no. 3 pole vault ace won his 3rd gold medal after dominating the men’s event in the 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
He previously won gold in the 2019 and 2021 edition of the Southeast Asian Games.
EJ said in an interview with reporters on Monday at the Morodok Techo Stadium that he decided to auction his gold-winning SEA Games shoes.
The Filipino pole vaulter said that the proceeds will be used to buy a pole vault pit — a mat used in pole vault as a landing spot for athletes after completing a jump — for several kids in a province in the Philippines.
EJ also said that the shoes he’s auctioning is a special one as there’s a Philippine flag on the sides.

He also said that he hopes to see more Filipino pole vaulters compete in different pole vault competitions someday.
“I’m auctioning these spikes. It’s gonna be auctioned to raise some funds for kids and hopefully, raise enough funds to buy some pit for a province in the Philippines,” EJ said. “This is a special one, there’s a Philippine flag there so everyone who’s listening, it’s up for grabs.”
According to a report on GMA News Online, EJ cleared the 5.65-meter mark to win the gold medal.
