Details about the Earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea w/ 7.2 Magnitude Tremor
EARTHQUAKE – A 7.2 magnitude quake hit New Guinea in Papua New Guinea region according to European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
Experts across the globe agree that earthquakes are the natural events that can hardly be predicted accurately – or even impossible at all. Thus, most countries turn to another thing – quake preparations. They set requirements in terms of building infrastructures and drills are also done most especially in high-rise buildings so the people will know what to do in case it happens.
Earthquake can happen both in land and water. In terms of the former, the danger is more on the damages in infrastructures which can further lead to deaths. When a quake occurs underwater, the risk is on the possibility of the natural event igniting tsunami, a giant wave that is usuaally caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption.
Most countries have quake-recording agencies. These are the bodies that release bulletins containing details about the quake. They also give public warnings in case there is a threat of a tsunami happening after the quake.
Recently, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Papua New Guinea region. Based on a report on Reuters, the strong quake hit New Guinea early today.
The EMSC further wrote that the quake had a depth of 80 kilometers or 49.71 miles. Based on the article, the United States Tsunami Warning System said that there are no threats of tsunami after the strong quake.
As of this writing, there are still no details as to whether or not there are damages caused by the quake. More updates may be posted soon.
