Cry Wolf Definition, Sentence Examples

CRY WOLF MEANING – Find out what cry wolf really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

The idiom is derived from a story about a young shepherd. He kept calling the villagers and told them a wolf was attacking his sheep, but it was always a hoax. When a genuine wolf appeared, no one believed his cries, and the sheep were all attacked.

In 1692, it was adapted from one of Aesop’s tales. Aesop was a Greek storyteller who lived about the year 620 BCE. The moral is that even if a liar is stating the truth, no one believes him. Since the 1800s, it has been used to signal that a false alarm has been raised.
