Antonio Carpio told Filipinos to elect a President that will defend the country’s sovereign rights in West PH Sea
Former Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said that Filipinos should elect a President in 2022 that would defend the country’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea.
This, as Former Associate Justice Antonio Carpio on Thursday made a call to the public as China had been persistent in its island-building activities in the West Philippine Sea even in the middle of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
In an interview with ANC, former Associate Justice Antonio Carpio said that the public should prepare for 2022. He also said that Filipinos should make sure that the new President that they will be elected in the upcoming elections will defend the country’s sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea “faithfully” and “sincerely”.
It was in July 2016 when the United Nations (UN) Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines by way of rejecting China’s nine-dash line which claimed the entire South China Sea.
Aside from rejecting China’s nine-dash line, the same ruling also declared that the Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, Panganiban (Mischief) Reef, Recto (Reed) Bank, and Spratly Island were all within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines and outlawed China’s action of preventing fishermen in the Philippines to access Panatag Shoal.
