Teacher Who Stood Up for Students Speaks Out on Viral Graduation Incident

Teacher Explains Why He Defended Students on Stage

LU NIETES — A teacher at Col. Ruperto Abellion National School (CRANS) has broken his silence following a viral graduation incident that earned him widespread praise online.

In an interview with educator Carl Balita, Teacher Lu shared his side of the story after confronting their principal, Venus Nietes, who had ordered some students to remove their togas during the school’s moving-up ceremony.

Teacher Lu explained that he acted out of concern for the students and their parents, believing that the event should be a time for celebration—not conflict. “At that very moment, I wasn’t thinking about it, na, I was a hero,” he said. “I was only thinking na moment to ng mga learners at parents so dapat i-celebrate nila yun.”

Although fully aware that speaking up could have consequences, he felt it was the right thing to do for the sake of the students’ dignity. His calm approach aimed to de-escalate the situation and refocus attention on what truly mattered: the students’ achievements.

Despite his actions, Teacher Lu reminded students to remain respectful toward school authorities. He addressed the behavior of one student who heckled the principal during the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of self-discipline. “Sa mga learners natin, be respectful pa rin sa mga people in authority. Very important yan. You have to continuously develop self-discipline,” he said. “Continue to make mistakes and learn from your mistakes.”

Meanwhile, those close to Principal Venus Nietes were deeply surprised by her actions. Teacher Irene Belarmino, a friend and colleague, expressed disbelief, recalling Nietes as a warm and loving educator. She questioned how leadership responsibilities might have changed her, reminding others that teaching is not just about enforcing rules, but also about showing compassion and care.

Former student Herald Bebis also spoke out, saying he found it difficult to believe the woman in the viral video was the same teacher who once guided and supported her students with kindness. He recalled how Nietes inspired learners to believe in themselves and never made them feel inferior.
