Karen Davila Calls Out Governor for Controversial Remark About Nurses
KAREN DAVILA – The broadcast journalist expressed her strong disapproval of Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia’s controversial statement about nurses.
The governor made a remark during a proclamation rally, suggesting that the provincial nursing scholarship program was only open to “beautiful women.” He added that if men were treated by unattractive nurses, it could worsen their condition.
Karen, clearly upset, took to social media on Sunday, April 6, to call out Unabia’s comments. In her post, she wrote, “Stop s*xualizing & objectifying nurses. Talagang hitsura ang basehan?” She emphasized that such remarks insult the nursing profession, reducing the value of nurses’ intelligence and skills, regardless of gender. “Nurses work really hard to take care of a stranger’s health and life. Value that,” she added.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) also took notice of Unabia’s remarks. According to COMELEC Chair George Garcia, the Commission will issue a show-cause order against the governor due to his s*xist statement. Garcia clarified that such comments, which discriminate against women, fall under the protection of COMELEC’s guidelines and resolutions, especially in election-related matters. He confirmed that the show-cause order might be issued as soon as April 7, 2025, and sent to the governor by April 8.
This incident has sparked widespread attention, with many supporting Karen’s call for respect for the nursing profession and condemning the governor’s inappropriate comment. As this issue unfolds, it raises important questions about gender equality and the treatment of professionals based on appearance.

Meanwhile, nurses in the Philippines have an important role in healthcare. They provide care to patients, administer treatments, and educate people about health. They assist doctors with medical procedures, take care of wounds, and offer first aid and CPR in emergencies. Nurses also advocate for patients, maintain medical records, and work with healthcare teams to create care plans. They are involved in public health programs and may specialize in areas such as pediatric or critical care. Some nurses also provide home care for patients who cannot go to the hospital. Their work is crucial in keeping people healthy.
