Harry Roque has firmly vowed to do everything in his power to bring former President Rodrigo Duterte back to the Philippines. Roque stressed that his legal team is committed to ensuring Duterte’s prompt release and return home.

“I have already said that we will not return home without [former] President Duterte, so let’s just say that our prayers are that he will be released at the soonest time possible and we will take all steps necessary to bring him home as soon as possible,” Roque declared.

The arrest of Duterte occurred on March 11 under the authority of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The warrant was based on allegations of crimes against humanity stemming from Duterte’s controversial war on drugs during his presidency. The campaign, which drew international criticism, resulted in thousands of deaths, prompting the ICC to launch an investigation.

Despite the ongoing controversy, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. dismissed speculations that Duterte’s arrest was driven by political motives. According to Marcos, the Philippine government was merely complying with Interpol’s orders regarding Duterte’s arrest. He insisted that the action taken was not influenced by internal political agendas but was in accordance with international protocols.

Roque’s public assurance reflects the determination of Duterte’s legal team to challenge the ICC’s move and secure the former president’s safe return. The former spokesperson underscored their confidence in the legal process and reaffirmed that their top priority is Duterte’s freedom.

As the situation unfolds, the Philippine public and international community continue to monitor developments closely. Duterte’s arrest and the legal battles surrounding it have sparked intense debate, with supporters demanding his immediate release and critics calling for accountability for alleged human rights violations. Roque’s steadfast commitment underscores the ongoing legal and political drama surrounding the former president’s fate.
