CIDG Chief Apologizes for Duterte’s Special Treatment

CIDG Chief on Duterte’s Arrest: “Pasensya na po kayo at ito ay kailangang gawin”

PMGEN NICOLAS TORRE III – The director of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), issued a public apology regarding the alleged “special treatment” given during the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte on March 11, 2025.

Speaking at a press conference on March 13, Torre admitted that Duterte received preferential treatment to prevent any disorder. He explained that the decision was made to ensure a smooth process and accommodate the former president’s requests. “Pasensya na po kayo, talagang napakalaking special treatment ang ibinigay natin sa former president Duterte. Para wala ng gulo at mapagbigyan ang lahat ng kaniyang kahilingan,” Torre stated.

He further clarified that the special treatment was necessary to facilitate Duterte’s transfer to the International Criminal Court (ICC). “Kaya pagpasensyahan po ng kababayan nating Pilipino na might be agreed on that special treatment given to him. Pasensya na po kayo at ito ay kailangang gawin para ang ultimate objective ay magawa natin—which is to bring him to the International Criminal Court,” he added.

Despite Torre’s explanation, some of Duterte’s family members and allies strongly condemned the handling of his arrest, alleging that he was denied medical attention—contradicting the supposed preferential treatment.

Torre reiterated his apology, emphasizing that the decision was made in consideration of the circumstances. He maintained that ensuring Duterte’s safe and orderly transfer was the priority.

Meanwhile, on March 7, 2025, Duterte traveled to Hong Kong with Honeylet Avanceña, his daughter Veronica, and his entourage. His lawyer claimed he was attending a KOJC campaign event, but his trip coincided with reports of an imminent ICC arrest warrant.

On March 11, 2025, Duterte was arrested at NAIA upon returning from Hong Kong. The ICC-issued warrant was enforced via Interpol. Duterte questioned its legitimacy, while supporters protested and activists welcomed it. He was later surrendered to the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands, where he remains in custody.
