Yumi Santiago Bids Farewell to Military Service
YUMI SANTIAGO – The Philippine Army reservist shared an emotional message about her decision to step away from military service following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the ICC.
In her statement, she expressed deep disappointment and sorrow, calling it one of the most painful days of her career as a soldier. Santiago emphasized her commitment to protecting the country and its people, having sworn an oath to serve under the Philippine flag. However, she admitted that recent events had shaken her faith in the justice system. She felt that Duterte, whom she viewed as a father figure to the nation, had been betrayed by the very people who succeeded him in leadership.
She also criticized how many people focused only on Duterte’s harsh words and outspoken nature while ignoring his contributions to the country. According to Santiago, foul language has become common in society, yet Duterte alone faced judgment for it.

More than anything, she shared how this situation had deeply affected her passion for serving the country. What was once a source of pride and dedication had been replaced by doubt and frustration. She struggled with the idea of continuing her advocacy when, in her view, injustice prevailed even within her homeland.
Despite her resignation, Santiago remained firm in her determination to fight for the future of her children, grandchildren, and the generations to come. She ended her message with a final farewell to her uniform and the memories she made in service, officially signing off as Sgt. Santiago, PAFR.

Meanwhile, former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been taken into custody by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands following his arrest. The ICC issued a warrant for his arrest on March 7, 2025, accusing him of crimes against humanity, specifically murder, linked to his anti-drug campaign during his time as Davao City mayor and later as president.
Duterte was captured in Manila on March 11, 2025, and later transferred to Rotterdam, Netherlands, arriving on March 12. After undergoing a medical assessment upon arrival, he is now awaiting his first court appearance before ICC judges.
