Couple Builds Home Through Husband’s Job as a Garbage Collector and Wife’s Side Hustles

Couple Builds a Home Through Hard Work and Dedication

DONALYN AND DEXTER – Admiration poured in from netizens for the couple who managed to build their own home through hard work and resourcefulness. Featured on GTV’s “Good News,” hosted by Vicky Morales, in the episode “New Year, New Home!” the Frias family from Cabuyao, Laguna, achieved a dream many thought impossible.

Dexter, who only completed high school, turned to garbage collection as his means of livelihood. Despite the unpleasant conditions, he embraced the work, knowing it was their ticket to survival.

Often, Dexter’s earnings were insufficient to support their growing family, especially when they lived in a makeshift shelter without basic utilities. Bumibili lang kami dito sa labasan,” Dexter recounted, feeling the sting of not being able to provide.

Amid the challenges, Donalyn remained his beacon of hope. Instead of complaining about their struggles, Donalyn chose to support Dexter.

Dexter continued collecting garbage while Donalyn took on various side jobs, selling snacks and working as a delivery rider. Believing women can handle tough jobs too, Donalyn ventured into delivery work.

From their patchwork shanty, the Frias family moved into a decent rental home, complete with electricity, water, and internet. While modest, it was a testament to their hard work. Their ultimate dream, however, was owning a home.

Dexter handed over his salary to Donalyn, who meticulously budgeted their expenses, prioritizing rent and savings for their house in Laguna. Despite their financial goals, they never neglected their children’s education. The couple, who hadn’t finished school, promised to secure better futures for their children. Their eldest, Andrea, aspired to be a flight attendant, proudly embracing her father’s work.
