Former Filipino Waiter Achieves Success in Dubai Selling Binatog
DARWIN GARCIA – A former waiter from Gapanz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, has become successful in Dubai by selling binatog, a classic Filipino street food made from boiled corn kernels with sugar and grated coconut.
His journey began when he moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2010 on a visit visa, aiming to find better opportunities for himself and his family. Initially, Darwin worked as a gym receptionist but later recognized the demand for traditional Filipino food among fellow overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Seeing the enthusiasm of Filipinos in Dubai for authentic Filipino snacks, Darwin decided to sell binatog online. At that time, no one else was offering it in Dubai, which led to a high demand for his product. His unique and quality product quickly gained popularity, allowing him to grow his business from online sales to opening a physical store in 2021. Darwin’s success with binatog inspired him to expand his offerings to include other Filipino favorites like buko pie.
Darwin’s wife and child helped him run the business, which initially had only five staff members, all OFWs from Satwa. The corn used in their binatog is sourced directly from the Philippines, ensuring authenticity in their products. The popularity of his shop led to significant sales, allowing Darwin to achieve his dream of providing a better life for his family. He was able to buy a house, land, and a car as a result of his business’s success.
Recently, Darwin expanded his business by opening a new branch of their bakery in Sharjah, near Dubai. He plans to open more branches across the UAE to bring more Filipino products to a broader audience. Darwin’s success story serves as an inspiration to many OFWs, showing that with determination, hard work, and the right business idea, it’s possible to achieve financial success abroad.
