Former Mayor Mabilog Tearfully Shares He Has Forgiven Duterte

Mabilog Has Forgiven Duterte

JED MABILOG – The former Iloilo City mayor tearfully shared that he has forgiven former President Rodrigo Duterte for the drug accusations that disrupted his life and forced him and his family to flee the Philippines in 2017.

Duterte had publicly named Mabilog as one of the politicians allegedly linked to the illegal drug trade, accusations that he has consistently denied. Fearing for his safety, Mabilog left the country after the allegations, concerned he could be the next politician killed in Duterte’s violent war on drugs.

In an emotional conversation with Karen Davila on ANC’s “Headstart,” he stated that he holds no ill will toward Duterte, saying, “As a true Christian, I forgive him.” He shared the deep fear and anxiety he experienced during that time but clarified that he had no plans to file legal action against the former president. Mabilog also noted that the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) investigation into Duterte’s war on drugs, which resulted in thousands of deaths, is already a significant step toward holding him accountable.

Reflecting on the past seven years, Mabilog revealed that despite the hardships, the experience allowed him to spend invaluable time with his family, something he rarely had during his time in public service. Now living in the United States under asylum status, he said he has been able to enjoy everyday family life—cooking for his children, taking them to school, and spending more time with his wife. He described these moments as the most precious gift and a silver lining amid the difficulties they faced.

Looking forward, Mabilog expressed his desire to return to the Philippines to clear his name, emphasizing that no drug charges were ever filed against him. He wants to face any legal issues and prove his innocence. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, in a separate interview, mentioned that the Philippine government could protect Mabilog if he decides to return, ensuring his safety while he addresses his pending cases.
