Why Shimenet is Trending on X?
SHIMENET – The term “Shimenet” has gained popularity on X (formerly Twitter) following Vice President Sara Duterte’s statements during a controversial budget hearing for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) at the House of Representatives on August 27.
The term emerged from a debate between VP Sara and House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas of Gabriela regarding the ₱125M confidential funds from 2022. Brosas questioned the handling of these funds, which were reportedly spent by the office within 11 days. VP Sara responded that the issue is being resolved by the Supreme Court, and when asked if Brosas could obtain a copy from the Court, VP Sara replied, “Of course not. I am not the Supreme Court.”
Brosas emphasized the public’s right to know about the use of public funds, calling for transparency and accountability. In response, VP Sara stated, “She may not like my answer. She may not like how I answer. She may not like the content of my answer, but I am answering.”
Netizens turned VP Sara’s phrase “She may not” into memes that phonetically sound like “Shi-mih-net.” The Facebook page “Linya-Linya” defined “Shimenet” as “short for ‘shit, mainit;’ pakiramdam kapag ginigisa ka sabay wala kang maisagot, kaya dinadaan mo na lang sa angas, pagpapaligoy-ligoy, at pagpapalusot..”
Reactions to “Shimenet” on X included comments about it being a roundabout way of answering questions or not addressing them properly. Some users criticized the focus on the term, while others supported President Inday Sara.
OVP spokesperson Michael Poa stated that VP Sara is not avoiding questions about the confidential funds and that the office is cooperating with the Commission on Audit (COA), although the process is still ongoing. As of press time, there has been no official response from the OVP regarding the “Shimenet” trend.
No matter how Sara answers, these commie dogs will never like it because truth is always a hateful thing for liars. Darkness always hates light.
