Karen Davila Addresses Backlash from Her Comments About BINI and SB19
KAREN DAVILA – The TV Patrol anchor addressed the backlash from her comments about P-pop groups BINI and SB19.
On July 23, 2024, TV Patrol reported on BINI’s international tour, including their upcoming performance at the pre-show KCON event in Los Angeles. The news delighted the anchors, including Karen, who praised BINI and remarked that while K-pop is globally famous, BINI has the potential to open doors for P-pop. She added that if BINI becomes famous, other Filipino artists would also rise to fame.
However, Karen’s statement quickly trended online, with many netizens, particularly fans of the P-pop boy group SB19, disagreeing. SB19’s fan base, A’TIN, defended that SB19 was the true pioneer in opening doors for P-pop on the international music scene. They felt Karen’s comment disregarded SB19’s achievements, including their numerous awards and contributions to the country’s music industry.
Aware of the discussion, Karen took to X (formerly Twitter) on July 26 to clarify her remarks. She stated that she did not intend to overlook SB19’s contributions. Karen acknowledged that SB19 was the first to open doors for P-pop internationally, a milestone that cannot be erased from music history. She explained that her comment meant that just as SB19 gained recognition as a boy group, a P-pop girl group like BINI could also gain international fame.
Karen emphasized that there is no need to compare the two groups, as both bring honor and pride to the Philippines. Her post read: “SB19 first opened the doors for PPOP internationally and made history! BINI is carving their own – being the first all girl group to hit it big. I should’ve been more specific. SB19 & BINI, you make us all proud! And may you both open more doors for aspiring local artists. Both are Proudly Filipino.”
SB19, consisting of Stell, Pablo, Justin, Josh, and Ken, was formed in 2016 and trained in South Korea, officially launching as a group in 2018. BINI, managed by ABS-CBN, was launched in 2021 and includes members Jhoanna, Aiah, Maloi, Mikha, Stacey, Gwen, Sheena, and Colet. Both groups have made significant strides in the P-pop industry, with SB19 being recognized as pioneers and BINI carving out their own path as a prominent girl group.
