Selling Vegetables Causes Mother and Daughter to Miss the Closing Ceremony, Receive Blessings
BUKIDNON – A mother and daughter missed a school closing ceremony where the daughter was to receive a medal because they were still selling vegetables. Their story went viral, leading to an outpouring of support.
The incident gained attention after Teacher Delia Buaya posted about her grade 1 student, Vivilyn, and her mother arriving at Lilingayon Central School in Valencia City, Bukidnon, carrying a basin of vegetables. They missed the ceremony because they were trying to earn money to buy a uniform for Vivilyn for her recognition ceremony.
After the post went viral, many netizens requested the GCash number to send help to the family. Teacher Delia collected a total of ₱13,000 in donations and happily shared the news with Vivilyn, her mother, and her father, who works as a laborer in the fields.
“They always said they were very happy and thankful. They wouldn’t have received help if it weren’t for my post,” said Teacher Delia. “I’m so grateful to the Lord for using me to help them.”
The teacher not only handed over the donations but also accompanied the family to do grocery shopping. They bought rice, household items, and clothes for Vivilyn. The mother and daughter also enjoyed a visit to a mall and a meal out.
Teacher Delia expressed her joy at the blessings received by her student’s family. She described Vivilyn as a quiet, obedient, respectful, and well-mannered child who gets along well with her classmates.
Meanwhile, in the Philippines, school closing ceremonies, often held between March and June, are significant cultural events celebrating students’ academic achievements. These ceremonies typically include formal processions, speeches, awards, and performances, and are attended by family members who bring gifts and tokens of appreciation.
