PLt. Col. Nazer Canja, the San Carlos police chief, stated that the 58-year-old janitor, known as “alias Rec,” confessed to starting the fire out of frustration upon learning he would be laid off from his position at the school effective June 15. Allegedly, the janitor purchased a gallon of gasoline and placed it near a lit candle in the school’s stockroom.

Canja clarified that the janitor’s motive was solely to burn down the school and not to damage the mayor’s residence. The janitor turned himself in on Saturday, June 15, reportedly following his dismissal for negligence in his duties and for being found intoxicated and smoking on school premises.

Currently, Gustilo and his family are residing in his sister’s home while she is abroad.
