White House Invites Pinoy Educator Roy Basa Honored as Teacher of the Year

DR. ROY BASA – The Filipino educator has been honored as the Teacher of the Year in New Mexico, USA.

Originally from Murcia, Negros Occidental, Basa has built a distinguished career in education, which began in his hometown. He is currently a technical education and science instructor at Twin Buttes Cyber Academy, where his innovative teaching approach emphasizes collaboration with local, state, and national institutions and industries, leading to exceptional student success.

The New Mexico Public Education Department and the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association recognized Basa’s contributions to education. His achievements were celebrated when he, along with 54 other State Teachers of the Year, attended a dinner at the White House hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden on May 2, 2024. Basa dedicated his award to his family and students, stating that success is a collective effort: “Winning in any endeavor is never an ‘I’ but rather a ‘We’ victory.”

Basa’s background is deeply rooted in science education. He spent 15 years teaching at the Night Class Department of Negros Occidental High School and also served as a part-time professor at various colleges and universities in the Philippines. These experiences helped him further develop his teaching skills and expand his knowledge in the field of science education.

Over the years, Dr. Roy Basa has received numerous accolades for his dedication and excellence in education. His recognitions include the 2024 Award for Continuing Excellence and Service from the Metrobank Foundation in the Philippines, the 2023 and 2024 SHELL Urban Science Educator Development Award from the National Science Teaching Association in the USA, and the 2023 Outstanding Science Educator Award from the New Mexico Academy of Science. These awards highlight his significant impact on education both locally and internationally, cementing his reputation as a leading educator.
