Rico Yan’s untimely death left a void in the hearts of many, yet his legacy endures through his films and the memories he crafted during his tenure in the industry. Claudine Barretto, reflecting on the events surrounding Rico Yan’s passing, became emotional during an interview with Ogie Diaz.

She revisited the controversial circumstances of her former on-screen partner and boyfriend’s death, including their breakup months prior to Rico being discovered deceased at a resort in Palawan.

“Ang nangyari was November 2001, nasa Ad Congress siya. ‘Pag uwi niya end of November, may nalaman ako and naghiwalay kami. Pero we we’re staying under the same roof.”

“Ang usapan is, January, move out. He was asking pa na ayaw niya umalis,” she added.

Claudine Barretto also acknowledged her own faults in their relationship, but she struggled to come to terms with what she discovered about her ex-boyfriend. She expressed, “Alam mo ang tagal kong prinotektahan ang pangalan ni Rico. Pareho kaming may mali. Hindi ko lang talaga matanggap ‘yung time na ‘yun kung ano man ‘yuung nangyari during Ad congress.”

One aspect clarified by Claudine was the rumored accusation that Rico had supposedly harmed her. “Our disagreement lasted until March 5, but it’s not true that Rico hurt me or became violent. That’s what I want to clarify. Never. We argued, but it never escalated to physical harm,” she stated.

She recounted allegedly being one of the last people Rico spoke to the night before his departure.

“’Yun yung pinaka pinagsisisihan ko. The night na March 29 ng madaling araw tumatawag siya… Last call niya was sa sister niya at sa akin”

“Alam mo ngayon naiisip ko, baka yun ang pinakamalaking karma ko…”

“Hindi alam ng tao, ako rin. Sinisisi ko rin ang sarili ko.”
