“UNGRATEFUL?” – A boyfriend was called ungrateful for refusing to treat his girlfriend’s family.
The issue arose when a Reddit user, known as totallynotpornact, shared his dilemma regarding his girlfriend’s family’s tipping habits. He regularly treated his girlfriend and her family to meals at his uncle’s Korean barbecue restaurant, covering the entire bill each time. However, during a recent outing, he noticed that despite paying over PHP13K for the meal, the family left a tip of only around PHP50, which he considered inadequate.
Despite his efforts to discuss the matter with his girlfriend and her family, they defended their minimal tipping practice, arguing that they weren’t accustomed to tipping generously. Frustrated by their response, totallynotpornact decided to stop footing the bill for future outings with his girlfriend’s family.
The situation escalated when, during a subsequent meal, he refused to pay for the family’s food, citing their inadequate tipping behavior. This decision led to backlash from the girlfriend’s family, who accused him of ingratitude and even made racist remarks against him. Despite the tension, the girlfriend stood by him, although her family continued to pressure her to end their relationship.
“They accused me of being ungrateful, arguing that they were the ones taking time to meet up with me bi-weekly and that asking them to tip was unreasonable in the beginning.” the Reddit user said.
In the Reddit thread, many users supported totallynotpornact’s decision, emphasizing that he wasn’t obligated to cover the family’s expenses, especially considering their ungenerous tipping. Some users also discussed the cultural differences in tipping practices, with some regions being more accustomed to tipping than others.
In the Philippines, giving tips has become rare since the implementation of the value-added tax (VAT) on ordered food. On the other hand, according to Table Agent, in the US, the appropriate amount of tip to give to the service crew is around 15 percent of the total order.
