In QC, a modern jeepney catches fire
QUEZON CITY – A modern jeepney caught fire past 1 p.m. on Friday along Commonwealth Avenue in Barangay Greater Lagro.
In the Philippines, “modern jeepneys” refer to a newer version of the iconic jeepney, which is a popular mode of public transportation in the country. Traditionally, jeepneys are colorful, elongated jeeps that were originally repurposed from surplus military jeeps left behind by American forces after World War II. They have become a symbol of Philippine culture and are known for their vibrant decorations, crowded seating, and loud horns.
The modernization of jeepneys aims to address several issues, including safety, environmental concerns, and efficiency. These newer versions typically feature updated designs, improved safety features such as seatbelts, and compliance with stricter emission standards. Some modern jeepneys are also equipped with amenities such as air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and GPS navigation systems.
The modernization efforts have been part of the Philippine government’s Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), which seeks to replace old, outdated jeepneys with newer, safer, and more environmentally friendly models. The program aims to improve the overall quality of public transportation in the country while also providing livelihood opportunities for jeepney drivers and operators.
Despite the push for modernization, there has been resistance from some traditional jeepney operators and drivers who argue that the cost of upgrading to modern vehicles is prohibitive and could threaten their livelihoods. Additionally, there are concerns about the potential loss of the unique cultural identity associated with traditional jeepneys.
Meanwhile, a modern jeepney caught fire past 1 p.m. on Friday along Commonwealth Avenue in Barangay Greater Lagro, Quezon City. The passengers and driver of the jeepney quickly got out, according to North Fairview Barangay Kagawad JV Frech Marigondon. He added that their fire truck was the one that extinguished the fire.
