Indonesian band Papinka addresses alleged song copying by Shaira
PAPINKA – The Indonesian band responded to netizens after being informed by some Filipinos about the potential plagiarism by the Queen of Bangsamoro Pop, Shaira, regarding one of their songs.
It was brought to attention that Shaira’s song “Forever Single” bore a resemblance to Papinka’s “Masih Mencitainya,” prompting Filipinos to notify the band about the issue.
In response, Papinka not only addressed Shaira but also other artists, expressing that they were okay with others covering their songs as long as they sought permission. The band criticized those who attempted to profit from copying someone else’s song, labeling it as ‘theft.’
They emphasized the importance of musicians respecting others’ intellectual property, stating that while covering songs is acceptable, permission must be sought before using any song’s melody. Furthermore, they asserted that not giving credit when earning income from a song constitutes theft.
“I hope musicians respect other people’s properties, their music covers are fine, but you must ask permission to use any song melody before uploading it, credit is not given if you earn income from the song, it’s theft,” the band reportedly said.
Meanwhile, the Queen of Bangsamoro Pop, Shaira Moro, defended Australian singer-songwriter Lenka against Filipino critics. Lenka faced backlash after taking action against a Filipina social media personality for copyright infringement of one of her songs. Shaira appealed to her fans to stop criticizing Lenka, emphasizing that Lenka’s team had a proper conversation with hers regarding copyright concerns.
