Arnold Clavio and Kuya react to resort in Chocolate Hills
CHOCOLATE HILLS RESORT – Kapuso journalists Arnold Clavio and Kuya Kim Atienza have voiced their concern over the controversy surrounding a resort built within the famous tourist attraction in Bohol.
Clavio shared on Instagram that the development of Captain’s Peak Resort has affected two hills in the area, leading to calls from internet users for its removal. He also pointed out the construction of a road in the village, which has impacted the surrounding land. Clavio criticized those responsible for protecting the environment, suggesting they’ve allowed its exploitation.
“Tila ang mga dapat na magbigay ng proteksyon at magbantay sa ating Inang Kalikasan ay mga naging ‘bantay salakay,'” said Clavio.
While Atienza expressed surprise that such a resort was allowed to be built near a UNESCO Heritage Site, questioning how it could encroach upon such an important location. “Omg? Paano natitulohan ang heritage site??” said Atienza.
Meanwhile, the resort in question, nestled within the beautiful protected area of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol province, has decided to close temporarily in response to growing criticism from the public. Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort’s temporary closure follows widespread concerns about operating a commercial establishment within the famous Chocolate Hills.
This decision comes shortly after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) revealed that it had issued a Temporary Closure Order (TCO) on September 6, 2023, and a Notice of Violation on January 22, 2024, against the resort. The DENR stated that Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort had been operating without an Environment Compliance Certificate, prompting regulatory action.
Captain’s Peak Garden and Resort shared the news of its temporary closure on its Facebook page, expressing regret for any inconvenience to guests. On the other hand, the DENR has yet to provide an update on the inspection carried out by its regional office but confirmed ongoing discussions with its Bohol regional operations team regarding the issue.
