The Social Security System, more popularly called SSS, is not only open for membership for locally-employed and self-employed individuals and overseas Filipino workers. It has also opened its doors for those who want to be voluntary members of the state-run social insurance institution.
The Social Security System is one of the biggest social insurance institutions in the Philippines and it is run by the government. It has countless members coming from different categories and many of them have availed at least one of the offers of the state entity that are exclusive for its members.
Among the offers of the Social Security System are the SSS loans and the SSS benefits that attend to different needs including emergencies due to health situations and calamities. An updated membership is a preparation not only for the unforeseen circumstances but also the future.
With regards to the voluntary membership, the process on how to apply for an SSS Membership as a voluntary member and the requirements depend if you are a separated member or a non-working spouse of a working SSS member.
The Separated Members includes the SSS members who are no longer employed, self-employed, or working abroad and want to continue their membership to the state entity. Here are the process and the requirements to apply for an SSS membership as a voluntary member:
Step 1 — Gather the documents required by the Social Security System for the SSS membership application:
- duly-accomplished SSS Form RS-5 (must indicate your previously assigned SS number)
- an original (or Certified True Copy) and a photocopy of any primary document or two (2) of any of the following secondary documents.
Step 2 — Go to an SSS branch to submit your duly-accomplished SSS Form RS-5 and the proof of identity.
Step 3 — The third step is the payment of the initial contribution. After then, your membership status will be changed to a voluntary-paying member of the state-run social insurance institution.
As mentioned, the non-working spouses of the SSS members may also apply for a membership to the state-run social insurance institution. Here is a guide:
Step 1 — Prepare the documents required by the Social Security System for the SSS membership application:
- duly-accomplished SSS Form NW-1 (Non-Working Spouse Record)
- an original (or Certified True Copy) and a photocopy of any primary document or two (2) of any of the following secondary documents.
- Marriage Certificate
Step 2 — Let your working spouse sign your SSS Form NW-1 or your Non-Working Spouse Record.
Step 2 — Proceed to the submission of your Application Form and the other requirements at an SSS branch.
Step 3 — After the processing, you will be issued your SS number.
