Millions of Filipinos inside and outside the Philippines are members of the Social Security System or more popularly known as the SSS. It is a state-run social insurance entity and the membership to this institution is a mandate in most offices in the private sector.

The members of the SSS include locally employed individuals in the private sector, self-employed individuals, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), household helpers, and voluntary members. SSS Sickness Benefit

The members of the Social Security System (SSS) may turn to the state-run social insurance agency in times of absence from work due to sickness. To qualify, for the benefit offer, the member must:

  • have paid at least three (3) months of contributions within the 12-month period immediately preceding the semester of sickness or injury
  • duly notified the SSS directly of the fact of sickness or injury

The SSS Sickness Benefit loanable amount may vary on a case-to-case basis with the total contributions posted by the member as a determiner. To file for a claim, there are SSS Sickness Benefit requirements that the member or an authorized representative must submit to the state-run social insurance agency.

SSS Maternity Benefit

Pregnant members of the SSS may turn to the Maternity Benefit. There will be weeks when the pregnant member has to stop work which also temporarily stops the source of income. To qualify, the pregnant member must have posted a total of at least three (3) months contribution within the 12-month period prior to the semester of the delivery of the baby.

The benefit amount depends on the type of delivery. To file the claim, there are SSS Maternity Benefit requirements that the pregnant member of the state-run social insurance institution must ready and submit.

SSS Disability Benefit

When an unexpected incident happens leaving the SSS member with a disability, he/she may turn to the Social Security System for financial assistance. The benefit offer covers both partial and total permanent disabilities.

The benefit amount depends on the case of disability. The state-run social insurance institution has set SSS Disability Benefit requirements in applying for the claim.

SSS Death Benefit

When an SSS member dies, his/her family can turn to the Social Security System for a financial assistance provided that he/she has posted at least 36 monthly contributions. The order of beneficiaries are as follows:

  • dependent spouse until he/she remarries
  • dependent legitimate, legitimated, and illegitimate children who are 20 years old and below, not employed, and single

In filing a claim, there are requirements for SSS Death Benefit application that the legal beneficiary must submit to the nearest branch of the Social Security System (SSS).
