Vice Ganda Takes a Swipe on People’s Initiative
VICE GANDA – The Unkabogable Star made a playful remark about the controversial People’s Initiative in the ‘EXpecially for You’ segment of It’s Showtime.
In the February 1 episode of ‘EXpecially for You’, Vice and Jhong teased each other when Vhong suggested talking to the contestants Mark and Jaira. “Kausapin mo na si Mark saka si Jaira,” Vhong said.
“Ba’t ‘di mo kausapin? Ito palautos talaga ‘to,” Vice jokingly replied. “Nakikita mo nagkukwentuhan kami ng kumpare ko [Jhong]. Kagagaling lang nito sa Senado.”
“Kinukwentuhan niya ko tungkol sa mga people’s initiative. ‘Di ba? dapat kausapin mo [Vhong] siya. Ano nangyayari don? Sinong mga nagbabangayan ngayon?” he added. “Wala ako dun!” Jhong quickly retorted.
To recall, the People’s Initiative (PI) for Charter Change (Cha-Cha) became a topic of discussion, allegedly causing a conflict between Senator Imee Marcos and House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Meanwhile, the “People’s Initiative for Charter Change” in the Philippines refers to a democratic process that empowers citizens to directly participate in proposing amendments or revisions to the country’s constitution. This initiative encompasses both constitutional amendment procedures and legislative initiatives.
Under the constitutional aspect, citizens can utilize the “people’s initiative clause” outlined in the 1987 Philippine Constitution, enabling them to propose changes to specific constitutional provisions. This involves collecting a specified number of signatures in support of the proposed amendments, which, if meeting legal criteria, are subjected to a public vote through a referendum.
Additionally, the People’s Initiative for Charter Change includes the right of Filipino citizens to directly propose statutes or call for referendums at both national and local levels. This legislative initiative involves gathering signatures to endorse specific legislative changes or policy proposals, with successful initiatives proceeding to a public vote. In essence, the People’s Initiative for Charter Change serves as a means for citizens to actively engage in shaping both the constitutional and legislative landscape of the Philippines, fostering a form of direct democracy.
