Two Young Siblings Left Alone in a Tree House in Lapu-Lapu City

In Lapu-Lapu City, two young siblings, aged 2 and 4, were found living on their own in a tree house

LAPU-LAPU CITY – Two siblings, aged 2 and 4, have been discovered living alone in a tree house, raising concerns among neighbors. Unlike the adventurous tales of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, these young brothers did not choose to live independently; it appears they were left unattended by their parents.

A concerned citizen reported the situation to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) of the local government. The two boys have received assistance, and details were shared on the CSWDO Facebook page on January 29, 2024.

The caption on the post highlighted the lack of guardianship for the siblings and the potential dangers they face living without adults in the tree house. The children often sleep on the edge of a pot with sharp sticks or in a neighbor’s dining area without proper bedding.

Various risks, including encounters with dangerous animals and the possibility of falling from the tree house, have been pointed out. The images shared depict the elevated structure made of wood, with certain parts lacking barriers, and potential hazards such as sharp objects like metal sheets and pointed sticks.

The whereabouts of the siblings’ parents add to the concern. Reportedly, their mother has traveled to Manila for work as a domestic helper, while their father, who should be caring for them, frequently leaves for extended periods without notice.

Despite receiving some food from the community, it is deemed insufficient. In response, the CSWDO is currently placing the children in their Home Care Center to ensure their safety, with the support of LGU officials on Violence Against Women and their Children.

As of press time, CSWDO has yet to provide an update regarding the situation of the boys. The government agency has earned praise for addressing the needs of the children.
