Thesis of Sociology Student About Seventeen and Filipino Carats Goes Viral
A sociology student goes viral online after sharing his thesis centered around the K-pop boy band Seventeen and their Filipino fanbase, known as Carats.
Raymart Rodriguez, a Facebook user, is making waves online after sharing his thesis centered on the K-pop boy band Seventeen and their fanbase called Filipino Carats. The post garnered reactions online.
According to Raymart, his journey as a fan of Seventeen began in 2018. His admiration for the group greatly influenced his decision to study them for his thesis.
After completing his first year in the BA Sociology program at the College of Arts and Sciences in UPLB, Raymart started thinking about possible topics for his thesis. Being a K-pop fan, he had already encountered topics related to K-pop and its fans in some of my courses.
“Pagkatapos noong ako ay maka-isang taon sa programang BA Sociology ng College of Arts and Sciences sa UPLB, nagsimula na rin akong magisip-isip ng mga maaari kong gawing topic para sa aking thesis. Bilang isang K-Pop fan, naging topic ko na rin ang K-Pop at K-Pop fans sa ilang mga courses na aking kinuha,” Rodriguez said.
The sociology student didn’t hesitate to choose Kpop as his subject when the time came to submit their thesis topics.
He also remembers one of their professors advising them to choose a topic for their thesis that they are passionate about. This was another factor that motivated him to pursue this topic.
“At nung dumating na ang panahon na kailangan na naming magsumite ng topic, hindi na rin ako nagdalawang isip na ito na ang aking gawing topic,” he added.
His thesis titled ‘Slipping into the Diamond Life: Filipino Carats’ Identity and Meaning as Fans of the K-Pop boy group Seventeen’ aimed to explore the experiences of ten Filipino fans of Seventeen, also known as Carats, through a phenomenological study.
