Pops Fernandez, dubbed the ‘Taylor Swift of the 80s’ by Martin Nievera
MARTIN NIEVERA – The Concert King called Pops Fernandez the “Taylor Swift of the 80s.”
The award-winning singer-actress, also known as the Original Concert Queen, drew crowds and celebrities to her 40th-plus anniversary concert titled “Always Loved” at The Theater At Solaire.
Some of the songs she performed on stage were by Paula Abdul, Cyndi Lauper, and Taylor Swift. She also sang a duet with fellow OPM icon Joey Albert. Additionally, Pops invited Erik Santos on stage to perform the videoke favorite “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang” together.
She also delivered an energetic sing-and-dance medley with Randy Santiago, featuring “Sunglasses at Night,” “Glamorous Life,” “Let’s Go Baby, Let’s Go Crazy, Come On,” “Break Out,” and “Everybody Have Fun Tonight.”
And of course, the audience cheered and applauded her production number with her ex-husband, Concert King Martin Nievera. The former couple revisited their past through selected songs that perfectly captured every episode of their married life until they separated. These included “Lately,” “Break It To Me Gently,” “You Have No Right (To Ask Me How I Feel),” and “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again.”
Martin told Pops, “I had to leave you for you to become the woman that you are today – fierce, survivor, the Concert Queen.” While introducing Pops, Martin said, “She could have been the Taylor Swift of the 80s. The woman who set the path for many singers of today. The Concert Queen!”
Some celebrities who attended Pops’ anniversary concert were her friends Zsa Zsa Padilla, Vina Morales, and Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson. At one point in the show, Pops admitted that she also reached a point in her life where she wanted to take a break from performing and produce concerts for other artists.
